Friday March 07, 2014 Gearing Up in Utrecht

Vince deBritto and I are preparing in Utrecht–purchasing charrette supplies, calling professionals, writing up schedules, and we are about to go out for frieten, one of the many items on the list of famous Dutch icons that are not actually from the Netherlands, but somehow the Dutch made them famous (tulips, windmills, etc.).

For some reason, perhaps national modesty, things the Dutch have invented are not known to be Dutch, for example music CDs, the shipping container, the orange carrot, not to mention the modern corporation and stock exchange.

We meet the students tomorrow for a walking tour of Utrecht – and begin our dive into the Cultural Ecology of Water in the Netherlands, 2014.
